Die Nährstoffeinträge über die Flüsse zeigen trotz großer interannueller Unterschiede eine abnehmende Tendenz. Die Abfluss-normierten Einträge nehmen seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre mit einer Rate von 2 bis 3% pro Jahr stetig ab. Für Trenduntersuchungen eignen sich die Nährstoffkonzentrationen im Winter aufgrund der niedrigen biologischen Aktivität am Besten. Für Phosphat und gelösten anorganischen Stickstoff (DIN) ist sowohl für die offene Deutsche Bucht als auch für das Wattenmeer eine signifikante Abnahme im Winter zu verzeichnen. Die auf den Salzgehalt 30 normierten winterlichen Nährstoffkonzentrationen in der Deutschen Bucht und im Wattenmeer korrelieren signifikant mit den abflussnormierten Flussfrachten. Die auf den Salzgehalt 30 normierten Phosphatkonzentrationen im Wattenmeer und im Küstengewässer lagen im Jahr 2006 mit 1,06 ± 0,05 µmol/L (32,8 ± 1,5µg/L P) noch oberhalb des im Rahmen vom BLMP für die Küstengewässer und das Wattenmeer festgelegten Orientierungswertes von 0,6 µmol/L (18,6 µg/L P). Die auf den Salzgehalt 30 normierten Konzentrationen des gelösten anorganischen Stickstoffs waren im Jahr 2006 mit 44,7 ± 3,2 µmol/L (0,63 ± 0,05 mg/L N) gut dreimal höher als die Orientierungswerte von 11 bis 14 µmol/L (0,15 bis 0,20 mg/L N).
