Der Hamburger Ton und seine Äquivalente unterteilen die Braunkohlensande in einen höheren und tieferen Abschnitt, die Oberen und Unteren Braunkohlensande (OBKS bzw. UBKS). Weitere Karteninhalte sind Angaben zur Grundwasserversalzung und zur Lage der Hauptgrundwasserscheide innerhalb dieses Wasserleiterkomplexes. Die Braunkohlensande sind die wasserwirtschaftlich bedeutsamsten Grundwasserspeicher des Tertiärs.
