Der Gewässerkundliche Mess- und Beobachtungsdienst wird vom LfU zusammen mit dem LKN geführt. Es werden die Grundlagendaten zur Ordnung des Wasserhaushaltes erhoben. Dazu werden in Schleswig-Holstein an über 400 Pegeln Wasserstände und an über 100 Pegeln Abflüsse gemessen.
Der Talraum ist eine hydrologische Fachkulisse und bezeichnet die Fläche, die bis zu einem bestimmten Hochwasserstand von einem Gewässer überflutet wird. Für Schleswig-Holstein wurde auf Basis von hydraulischen Berechnungen und Ansätzen der Regimetheorie eine Talraumkulisse hergeleitet, die die Lage und Ausbreitung der Talräume landesweit beschreibt. Sie besteht aus folgenden Teilkulissen: 1. In der Marsch: Potenziell natürlicher Entwicklungsraum 2. In den übrigen Naturräumen: Vereinfachtes Verfahren HQ100 3. In den übrigen Naturräumen: Ergänzung durch reliefkorrigierten (Reliefkorrektur Höhe über Tiefenlinie) potenziell natürlichen Entwicklungsraum.

Die regionalisierten Abflusskennwerte (Reg2022) beschreiben die mit Hilfe statistischer Verfahren landesweit regionalisierten Abflusskennwerte MNQ, ZQ (Median/Zentralwert), MQ, Q330, MHQ und die HQ-Quantile für Schleswig-Holstein.
Die Daten wurden auf der Grundlage landesweit verfügbarer Geomerkmale und den Daten der vorhandenen Abflusspegel regionalisiert.
